DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
- Common Sense Media has wonderful resources for K-12, including detailed lesson plans, videos, a scope and sequence, etc. The resources are free, but you do need to create a free account. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/educators/scope-and-sequence
- Digital Passport program for grades 3-5. Online modules. Teacher creates accounts for students. (We use the same username and password as for AR.) Can be supplemented with pencil/paper lessons. Each module includes a brief video, lesson/content, and game. I do the complete module with 5th graders. https://www.digitalpassport.org/educator-registration
- Books and videos:
- Bully by Patricia Polacco. Great read-aloud and discussion of cyerbullying (5th).
- The Berenstain Bears’ Computer Trouble by Jan & Mike Berenstain. Internet safety and message of balancing screen time with other activities. (2nd)
- Faux Paw’s Adventures on the Internet by Jacalyn S. Leavitt and Sally Shill Linford (paperback book with movies on CD-Rom). I show the movies and discuss with students. (2nd)
- DVD: Internet Safety - The Safe Side. 3rd and 4th grade. Lots of good messages in this, but warning: it is goofy! But the kids love it. They were riveted.
- Web Evaluation Unit
- Antis, Barbara. “Who’s the Judge? Evaluating Internet Sites.” School Library Media Activities Monthly May 2006: p. 11-14. Great role playing activity / court case -- authority, expert, credibility.
- Rating and evaluating websites
CALDECOTT (BOOK STUDY AND PROMOTION)
- Look at books. Compare and contrast different styles. Compare older Caldecotts with more recent winners. Display books -- kids are excited to check out a book with a medal on the cover!
- Musical book browse game (like musical chairs)
- Audioboom project -- choosing and discussing a favorite illustration from a Caldecott book. NOTE: Audioboom went from being free to requiring a subscription. I suggest using the free iPad app Chatterpix Kids and uploading the projects to a Padlet. Student samples.
- Students choose a Caldecott book they like and choose a favorite illustration. Next, students write out a script telling the title and author of the book and why they like the illustration. The students practice reading these aloud until they are fluent. Students use iPads and Audioboom (or the free Chatterpix Kids app) to take a photo of their favorite illustration and record their voices reading their script.

THEMES
Some themes I've used are year-long, and others last a few weeks. I rotate my themes and only do one per school year. These are some of the themes I've used over the past several years. So far I haven't repeated a theme, but I've saved my materials so I can use them again in the future.

Kindness
- Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed by Emily Pearson (pay it forward idea; random acts of kindness)
- Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson
- Summary: When Ms. Albert teaches a lesson on kindness, Chloe realizes that she and her friends have been wrong in making fun of new student Maya's shabby clothes and refusing to play with her. / The book talks about your words sending out ripples like when a rock is put in water. I brought a large clear bowl and some rocks. I filled the bowl with water. Then each child dropped a rock in the bowl and told something they could do to be kind to others.

- Our principal read this aloud and I brought items from home so he could have students help him “set the table” as he read. Each item on the table represents something about the missing loved one.
